West Architecture, founded in 2006 by Graham West, is a London-based practice working on residential, commercial and public buildings. The studio believes in logical, rational design that uncovers beauty through elegant problem solving. By embracing constraints and making them an equal partner in the design process, the practice is well equipped to deal with complex projects. The team believe in open conceptual conversations with clients and collaborators to ensure a truly collaborative process at all stages of design and construction.
Striking a balance between artistry and technical ability, West Architecture is able to navigate the architectural journey, with carefully considered detailing that allows for creative expression through precision. Materials are chosen for their inherent beauty, their respect of the surrounding context and their viability to fulfil a fundamental purpose. The end result of each project is actually the distillation of many design solutions that form the most plausible and pertinent outcome.
The work of the practice has been recognised in a number of industry awards and completed projects have been exhibited nationally.
In 2016 West Architecture was featured in the Architecture Foundation’s book, New Architects 3 “The definitive survey of Britain’s best emerging practices”.
Graham West founded West Architecture in 2006 on the belief that joy is found in architectural projects from conception to completion. Graham started his career as a structural draughtsman at Arup and his work demonstrates a blurring between architecture and engineering.
He later worked at the Manser Practice on The Great Eastern Hotel and the Artigiano Design Centre, which he oversaw on from start to finish, picking up an RIBA award in 2002. At Patel Taylor he was a project architect responsible for the delivery of two fully enclosed swing bridges at Canary Wharf.
Graham’s first solo project, Bavaria Road Studio, is typical of the approach of West Architecture. It is a finely detailed piece of architecture that finds beauty in the raw simplicity of its use of materials to resolve constraints. The mezzanine level at Bavaria Road is paired down, rational, highly functional and elegant.
